Ideas for parents and caretakers of at risk children.

Here are a few ideas that will help you in your efforts to decrease behavior problems with your child.

1. Tell your child twice a day that you love them
2. Tuck your child in at night.
3. Make sure they have chores to do on a routine basis.
4. Spend quality, value time with your children on weekends.
5. Get your children involved in an activity. (Boy's Club, YMCA, 4H, Boy/Girl Scouts)
6. Find your child's learning style.
7. For younger children, make sure that you give them quiet time or nap time on a consistent basis.

- Fading toward desired behavior.
- Rewards for good behavior set Behavior Goals.
- Establish Teacher rules.
 

Teach children how to set goals and keep their word.

Teach children how to achieve goals.

Teach children to accept responsibility for their own actions and to understand the conswquences.

Acknowledge children's accomplishments.

Teach and model appropriate ways of communicating.

Parents, mind the tone of your voice.

Use humor.

Parents should use "I" statements rather than "You" statements.
Example: "You just can't keep quiet!" It sounds threatening.
Say: "I like to hear you speak, please speak quietly." This provides the listener a sense of security and tunes him/her in to your intended action.

Address the issue quickly and calmly.

Be consitent so your children or students know what to expect.

COMMUNICATION

1. Keep communication objective.

2. Parents may have some disappointment on behaviors.

3. Parents need to let teachers know when is a good time for contact on certain types of behavior.
